South Austin Community Acupuncture offers treatment on a sliding scale in a comfortable group setting. You pick what you pay between $20 and $40.
We do this because we think more people should be able to have access to acupuncture and be able to use it as frequently or for as long as needed to get the best results. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine are safe and effective for a wide range of conditions, but unfortunately, the cost of private treatment is prohibitive for most people. Community acupuncture offers a creative solution to this problem.
The inspiration for South Austin Community Acupuncture comes from a clinic in Portland, Oregon called Working Class Acupuncture, where a couple of acupuncturists who were fed up with the status quo turned the usual acupuncture business model on it's head. They let people pay what they could afford, and gave treatments in recliners in a group setting instead of in private rooms on tables. The thinking was that by charging less and treating people together, more people could get acupuncture - and more people could get acupuncture more often. Well...it worked!
A quiet revolution took root in the acupuncture community and community acupuncture clinics blossomed across the land, now organized as the Peoples Organization of Community Acupuncture. South Austin Community Acupuncture was among the first wave of community acupuncture clinics in the US, and among a handful of community acupuncture clinics in Austin that all opened around the same time. Five plus years and many thousands of treatments into it, we are honored to be able to provide such a valuable service to the community.
At South Austin Community Acupuncture we’ve got nine recliners in our big room, and people quietly come and go throughout the day as their appointments happen. We usually chat with you briefly in private before going in, and we just need to be able to get to your elbows and knees down, so you are fully clothed. It’s a very comfortable setting, and actually a very traditional way of doing acupuncture. The group setting also makes it possible for friends and family to come together and, unless we’re completely out of room, you can pretty much stay as long as you want.
Acupuncture is by appointment, and you can schedule online or via telephone. We look forward to seeing you soon!
